HMS Hood was the pride of the Royal Navy — the largest warship in the world for two decades, a symbol of British naval power, and the subject of one of the most shocking losses of World War II. Sunk in just three minutes by the German battleship Bismarck on 24 May 1941, Hood took 1,415 men with her, leaving only three survivors. In 1/128 scale she makes a truly commanding model — over 270cm (nearly 9 feet) long.
This guide walks you through building and detailing the 1/128 HMS Hood using 3D printed upgrade parts, from her iconic twin 15-inch gun turrets to her distinctive funnels and superstructure.
A Brief History of HMS Hood
Laid down in 1916 and commissioned in 1920, Hood was an Admiral-class battlecruiser displacing 48,360 tons at full load. Armed with eight 15-inch guns in four twin turrets and capable of 31 knots, she was the most powerful warship afloat when completed. By 1941, Hood was aging and overdue for a major refit that would have added significant deck armor — the very weakness that proved fatal when a Bismarck shell penetrated her aft magazine. Her loss shocked the world and galvanized the Royal Navy's pursuit of Bismarck, which was sunk just three days later.

Step-by-Step Build Sequence
Step 1 — Research Hood's 1941 appearance. For the May 1941 configuration, reference John Roberts' Battlecruisers and the Imperial War Museum photo archive. The UP rocket launchers are a key late-detail to include.
Step 2 — Hull preparation. Sand all surfaces smooth, fill print lines with thin CA glue, and prime with grey automotive primer. Hood's distinctive bow sheer and flare are defining features — preserve them carefully.
Step 3 — Lower hull painting. Admiralty Red underwater hull (Vallejo 70.985 Hull Red). Black boot topping at the waterline.
Step 4 — Upper hull and decks. Home Fleet Grey overall (Vallejo 70.990 Light Grey lightened with white). Teak decks in Vallejo 70.847 Dark Sand or Tamiya XF-78 Wooden Deck Tan.
Step 5 — Main turrets. Build and paint all four turret sets separately. Install barbettes first, then seat the turrets. Gun barrels in dark metal.
Step 6 — Funnels and superstructure. Build as sub-assemblies. Paint funnel interiors dark grey/black. The foretop and rangefinder platforms are complex — build and paint separately before installing.
Step 7 — Secondary armament and fittings. Install 4-inch guns, UP rocket launchers, ship's boats, doors, rope reels, and anchors. Boats in grey with white interiors.
Step 8 — Weathering. Apply a grey panel line wash throughout. Add rust streaks from hawses and scuppers, exhaust staining around the funnels, and light salt spray chipping on the bow.
Display Ideas
At 1/128 scale, Hood demands a serious display base. A North Atlantic waterline scene with grey-green seas and white-capped waves evokes the Denmark Strait where she met her fate. A low-angle viewing position emphasizes her imposing length and the graceful lines that made her the most beautiful warship of her era.
Final Thoughts
Building HMS Hood in 1/128 scale is a project of real ambition — and real reward. She is one of the most beautiful warships ever built, with a story that resonates far beyond the world of scale modeling. Every detail you add honors the 1,415 men who went down with her.
